Alaska Humane Society

Interested in Volunteering with the Alaska Humane Society Adopt-A-Cat Shelter?

There are many ways to volunteer at AHS! Various opportunities are available, both on-site at our physical shelter with the cats and off-site as         well! Please note that volunteering at the shelter requires a minimum of age of 16. However, we do welcome volunteers ages 12 – 15 with             adult supervision required at all times.

At the shelter:

  • Cleaning and socializing: choose a 2-hr shift from 7pm-9pm Monday – Friday, 11am-1pm on Saturday or 1pm-3pm on Sunday. Duties include scooping litter boxes, washing water bowls, refilling food and water bowls, sweeping, mopping and finally, petting and socializing cats.
  • Basic food preparation and socializing: 10am-12pm Wednesday (socializing only), 3pm-6pm on Saturday and/or Sunday. We hope to have more sessions opening soon!
  • Assisting with daily medications, vet visits, and other cat care needs. These opportunities will involve special training.
  • Deep cleaning: participate in periodically scheduled “deep cleaning” days to tackle cleaning tasks that require more time than regular cleaning days.

Training for volunteering at the shelter:

Volunteering at the shelter involves a 2-hr initial tour and training to learn the cleaning process and basic socialization. As mentioned above, additional on-site volunteer opportunities require special training.

Outside the shelter

  • Participate in informational events around Anchorage to inform the public about the shelter and our mission.
  • Participate in fundraising events like the annual AHS Garage Sale.
  • Join an AHS board committee (fundraising, outreach, etc.).
  • Join our foster community and give our cats a safe, loving home outside the shelter environment.
  • Share your expertise (e.g., fundraising, newsletter drafting, grant writing, website development, carpentry, electrical work, social media, photography, writing bios for adoptions, etc.). We would love to talk with you about how your skills can support us!
