About Our Shelter

The Adopt-a-Cat shelter provides a loving, safe, and comfortable home for cats in need. Our shelter is open-concept; our cats roam freely around our two-story warehouse, which has cat trees, beds, toys, hidey holes, and ramps for them to rest or explore as they wish!

All of our cats are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, tested for feline leukemia (FeLV) and feline immunovirus (FIV), and micro-chipped. The cats that call our shelter home are a mix of adoptable or adoptables-in-training. Our warehouse is spacious enough that our cats can find their own personal space and many of them form lasting friendships with other cats!

Our shelter is made up of several unique spaces as we strive to meet the individual needs of all of our cats. Our spaces include, Quarantine, The Office, Shy Cat Room, Beluga Room, Transition Rooms 1 & 2, Apartments 1-4, Kitty Condos (Including Pat’s Penthouse) and our Main Floor (upstairs and downstairs).

Quarantine is where new kitties, whether they are live-trapped, owner-surrenders, or taken into our program from our rescue partner, Anchorage Animal Care and Control, spend the first 2-4 weeks of their time at the shelter.

Before entering the main spaces of the shelter, the cats in Quarantine need to visit the veterinarian to get a clean bill of health or get a diagnosis to ensure they receive the proper consistent care needed! Once we have that clean bill of health or a diagnosis with a treatment plan, the cats begin their transition to either the Office, Shy Cat Room, Beluga Room, Transition Room #1 or #2, one of our 4 Apartments or one of our  Kitty Condos before moving to our Main Floor. The Office is home to our special kitties who need medication or a little peace and quiet.

The Shy Cat Room is on the second floor of the shelter and is where our cats who are more on the shy side stay. This room is smaller than the main floor, which makes it possible for our devoted volunteers to spend time socializing with these cats to prepare them for their forever home!

Our Beluga Room is an extension of our Shy Cat Room. This houses 10 cats who are on the shyer side as well. This setting provides the cats with a safe smaller space where volunteers can work on socializing them to help them connect with the perfect home.

Our Transition Rooms were created to help our cats as they move from our Quarantine Area to the Main Floor. This gives them a small space to acclimate to the larger setting,  to all the new sounds, sights, smells and help them and the other cats build familiarity with  each other. The goal is a to help them have a positive supportive experience as they transition to the larger Main Floor. Depending on the cat, this process may take several weeks.

Our Apartments were built to accommodate unique needs such as diet, medical or behavioral needs. They are also used as a transition space for cats moving out of Quarantine.

Finally, the Main Floor of the shelter is where visitors will spend most of their time. This is where most of our kitties hang out and play!
